How to Stop Heavy Periods and Control Period Cramps, Naturally!

Throughout our lives, we go through so many hormonal changes, face anxiety and depression, struggle with chronic fatigue, and more. Each of these issues can mimic PMS symptoms OR cause your “favorite” time of the month to be slightly worse than normal. Knowing how to stop heavy periods can be a game changer.

Some period symptoms — like spotting before and/or after, bleeding more with clots, or skipping periods without pregnancy — may warrant a trip to your primary care. But often, you simply need to address whole-body wellness issues to discover how to stop heavy periods, naturally!

With that in mind, let’s dig into how to stop heavy periods and reset your other period symptoms.

How to Stop Heavy Periods Naturally

A few weeks ago, I faced my own “worst period ever.”

I looked at natural remedies for period cramps, regulating longer periods, and learned how to get regular periods naturally. To prepare my body for the next cycle, I tried a couple of simple tricks to return menstrual flow back to normal.

And I’m happy to say that I successfully lessened my menstrual bleeding and brought my body back to my normal! I had zero PMS symptoms and a light-mod flow and started the exact day I was supposed to. Win-win!

It takes some willpower and dedication to feel your best – but girl, you can do this!

What home remedy can I use to stop heavy periods?

First, you may have to try a few things before you find what works for you!

Often if you go to the doc and get a clean bill of health, they may prescribe a treatment plan for irregular periods that consists of birth control, antidepressants, NSAIDs, or diuretics to regulate your periods. But if you’re not sick — you can simply feed your body what it needs instead of attacking the symptoms.

I cut carbs and drank celery juice (organic cold-pressed) daily for a week before and during my period — and WOW what a difference! I continued using my normal red raspberry leaf blends and saw drastic improvement.

Here’s more on why each of these approaches works, along with a few other ideas.

Cutting processed foods, sugar, and caffeine. These foods typically create our gut health to go haywire. When you can eat mostly whole foods and use natural sources of energy, you'll feel better, experience less bloating, and have fewer irregular menstrual symptoms!

Drinking organic cold-pressed celery juice. This is simply one of the most hydrating vegetables that you can consume! You can help your body improve digestion and reduce bloating — and you'll most likely see inflammation and and potentially skin issues start to go away. I loved the effects it had on my body and my menstrual cycle.

Eating iron-rich foods. If you’ve been struggling with your period for a while, you want to be sure your iron levels are high enough! Some research suggests that low iron levels may contribute to heavier flows. Liver, leafy greens, quinoa, and beans can help you boost those levels quickly!

Quick Tip: If you add parsley to your recipes, the vitamin C levels can help you absorb iron more as well as stem inflammation in your body!

Reduce stress. Adding exercise to your normal routine is one of the best stress-relievers. Simply moving for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week or walking for 30 minutes a day can help you release those endorphins and lessen your stress.

If you’re struggling to fall asleep or have been having recurrent headaches, be sure to practice deep breathing throughout the day, get a great sleep routine going, or try a massage to reset your body.

Maintain a healthy weight. I’m listing this last because when you implement these whole-body wellness techniques, you will begin to see your weight management improve!

Too often our culture makes us want to lose weight, and we try to create habits that are unsustainable. But by making smaller, more simple changes throughout your month, you are more likely to see permanent life change! And dropping a few pounds can help you regulate your period.

All these simple changes can help you eliminate cramps and other symptoms of PMS as well as reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and regulate your cycle. But if you're struggling with crazy painful cramps, there's a few more things you can try!

  • Apply heat to your lower back.
  • Massage your abdomen, side, and stomach with essential oils like lavender, marjoram, and clary sage.
  • Avoid salty foods and caffeine particularly during your period.
  • Have an orgasmGet cozy with your husband to experience those endorphins and oxytocin to help your body release the tension you are experiencing.
  • Use an organic CBD-based melt. To relieve cramps and get rid of other undesirable PMS and menopause symptoms, try our proprietary CBD hemp melts! They can reduce tension, vaginal pain and discomfort while giving you great lubrication during your most uncomfortable time of the month.

In American society, we live in a constant state of stress and triggers. From caffeine, lack of sleep, and bad foods to living on edge and being on screens too often, it’s no wonder that our mind-gut connections and inflammatory issues show up with irregular PMS symptoms, gut dysbiosis, and more.

When you take a whole-body approach to your physical processes, you will see a definite change in how you feel, especially during your menstrual cycle.

Remember — you are the best expert on your body! If you can pinpoint root causes of your symptoms, you often can tweak your diet and routines to help you relax, recoup, and regenerate a normal feminine cycle.
